Steering gear control systems: New maintenance requirement
Regular check/exchange of potentiometers

The follow-up handwheel and the feedback unit are important components of the follow-up control loop in a steering gear control system

Errors can lead to a follow-up control loop failing with the consequence that the rudder does not follow a setpoint or, in the worst case, is moving in an uncontrolled manner. In such a case, the NFU direct control is still available as a redundant system.

The potentiometers, which sense the setpoint in the case of the handwheel and the actual rudder value in the case of the feedback unit, are of particular importance in the follow-up control loop. It should be noted that the potentiometers in the feedback unit are subject to a significantly higher load, as they are also frequently moved in NFU and autopilot mode.

For this reason, we have revised our maintenance specifications:

  • Follow-up Handwheels: a visual inspection of the potentiometers and a check of the correct potentiometer mounting is required at intervals of 3 years.
  • Feedback Units: a change of the potentiometers used for the follow-up control loop is required at intervals of 5 years.

The following products are affected:

Follow-up Handwheel type 105-106.NG/SAxxx for NautoSteer
Follow-up Handwheel type 105-400.NG/SAxxx for NautoSteer AS

Feedback Unit type 101-528.NG/SAxxx for NautoSteer
Feedback Unit AS type 101-532.NG/SAxxx for NautoSteer AS

Non-authorised parts

We recommend all our customers to only use original Anschütz products and spare parts.

Authorised sales and service partners of Anschütz are regularly trained to install and maintain your navigation systems to ensure the safety of your vessel at sea as well as full compliance with any regulation. However, we need to point out that the purchase, installation and maintenance of products from non-authorised companies poses a risk! In case of an incident, the use of non-original products and spare parts has wide-ranging legal effects including the expiration of the national and international type approvals. Anschütz will not be responsible for any warranties or follow-up costs which are caused by the violation of this policy.

Warranty procedure

Our top priority is always to solve the problem that has occurred on board!
As part of the warranty, we cover costs for parts and adequate labour at standard time. The warranty for spare parts is always limited to the respective part. Precondition for claiming warranty is that the system has been installed by an authorised service partner. Furthermore, the defective parts must be returned to us by RMA (Return Material Authorisation). Please read our Terms & Conditions (GToB) for more information.

In case you did not buy systems or parts directly from us (but e.g. from a shipyard), the warranty terms and conditions you agreed upon with your supplier might differ from ours.

Please check your contract and the GToB.

Should you have any warranty-related questions or want to request an RMA, please contact: aftersales(at)anschuetz.com.
If you contact service(at)anschuetz.com, our service coordination will help to arrange a (warranty) service or send out spare parts.

In cases of urgency, you can also contact the authorised service partner directly. Our partners will solve your problem and handle the logistic and commercial issues directly with us.
