SYNAPSIS INS proven in antartica

- State-of-the-art navigation systems aboard RRS Sir David Attenborough -

The story of Raytheon Anschütz, a business of Raytheon Technologies, began when Herrmann Anschütz-Kaempfe gained experience in navigating ships during polar expeditions.

Today, more than a hundred years later, expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic are still of the utmost importance when researching and understanding the changes in the world’s oceans and global climate. And Raytheon Anschütz is an expert in providing state-of-the-art research vessels with sophisticated integrated bridge systems.

A great example of this expertise is now aboard the brand-new polar research vessel RRS Sir David Attenborough, which has just successfully completed its ice trails as part of its maiden voyage to Antarctica in January 2022.

Raytheon Anschütz delivered a state-of-the-art, sophisticated integrated navigation system (INS) consisting of various multifunctional workstations for navigation, planning stations, fuel efficient and precise autopilots, winterized radars and a redundant, maintenance-free gyro compass system. With all hardware moved into a dedicated 19-inch rack, the INS offers reliability and tremendous flexibility in an ergonomic bridge design while simplifying maintenance tasks.

Its design and equipment make the RRS Sir David Attenborough one of the most advanced scientific maritime vessels ever constructed. Safe and accurate navigation takes place under the stringent requirements of the Polar Code ice class 5 and LR NAV1 IBS notation.
