An Integrated Navigation System (INS) is the heart and soul of the integrated bridge system. It provides validated information and data to all applications and ensures a consistent situational picture. The INS integrates and manages sensor data, routes, charts and tracks, and provides central system services, such as intelligent central alert management.

SYNAPSIS NX is a state-of-the-art INS, combining all relevant navigation sensors and systems in one modular, user-centred system for a safer and more efficient navigation. The bridge team benefits from less distraction, superior situational awareness, decision support and a smaller risk of human error. SYNAPSIS NX is type-approved according to IMO performance and IEC test standards MSC.252(83)/IEC 61924- 2 for INS. It fulfils basic IMO requirements as well as highest class notations.

Designed to customer requirements

SYNAPSIS NX integrates multiple workstations with Anschütz’s navigational applications in any combination. All applications can be enhanced with modular features and extensions:

The modular system architecture and the Bridge Integration Platform simplify adding additional workstations and applications to the system (as is technically feasible).
Sensor-agnostic system with applications being designed for easier upgrades (upgrades by pure means of software modules, see application websites for Radar NX and ECDIS NX).
System extensions (e.g. per ASTERIX Server, Digital KVM matrix or similar) or customised designs (e.g. including a rack) are possible.
Fully tested: INS configurations are continuously tested by Anschütz in a large inhouse-laboratory. Full factory acceptance tests are obligatory for each project.

Multifunctional Workstations

SYNAPSIS NX features Multifunctional Workstations that integrate any combination of our navigational applications. Thanks to modern, clear structured user interfaces and consistent use of data and designations across all applications, navigators benefit from very intuitive operation. The workstations also enable a central and local change of colour palettes and brightness, and they share individual and situation-specific user settings.

The SYNAPSIS NX Multifunctional Workstations are configured to meet customer requirements. In addition, a wide range of software modules and optional extensions are readily available. This way, the navigation system remains scalable to meet customer needs and operational requirements throughout its lifecycle.

All solutions are implemented in strict IMO compliance. Integrated redundancies and managed configurations add further safety to the system.

Bridge Integration Platform

The Bridge Integration Platform (BIP) is an infrastructure software that acts as the ‘brain’ of SYNAPSIS NX. It collects, validates and processes sensor data, targets, routes and other information to create a comprehensive picture of the navigational and maritime situation that is shared with all workstations. In addition, the BIP monitors the status of all systems and functions, managing alarms intelligently.

Instead of monitoring and operating many individual systems, the navigator interacts with one single, overall navigation system. The clear and consistent presentation of data and information on every display on the bridge as well as the reduction of unnecessary alarms make a significant contribution to situational awareness and safety.

functionalities

SYNAPSIS NX ensures a reliable and secure operation of the navigation system. It provides central system functions like configuration management, security information & event management, health monitoring and automated redundancy handling. The navigators also benefit from these functions:

Central management, analysis and distribution of sensor data

SYNAPSIS NX provides central monitoring and integrated, continuous plausibility checks of sensor data regarding availability, integrity and reliability. Corrupted sensor data as well as malfunction and disturbance is detected, marked and excluded from selection and distribution.

Advanced target and zone management

Target management associates targets between S-band radars, X-band radars and AIS. From this, system-level targets are created, which are further processed and used in the system (e.g. for CPA alerts).

Central, intelligent alert management

Alert management collects and analyses alerts and determines, with regard to system configuration and status, whether the situation is sufficiently critical to set off an alarm, or whether the watch officer should only receive an alert of lower priority. Furthermore, any alert integrated into the system can be viewed and silenced at any workstation acc. to bridge alert management standard MSC.302(87) IEC 62923-1 and -2.

Smart system architecture

SYNAPSIS NX features a modular and flexible network infrastructure. Standardised hardware and LAN components provide the backbone for the system, including the NautoPlex data converter that collects and converts sensor data to LAN (less cabling effort, higher flexibility for installation).

Workstations and applications are added and configured according to customer requirements. The workstations can be equipped with high performance Small Marine Computers (SMC) and displays in various sizes: as a standard, the workstations can be combined with high-quality, wide-screen TFT monitors. All monitors are designed for marine applications and type-approved for radar and ECDIS, featuring anti-reflection-coated front glass as well as LED backlight for low power consumption.

Computers, data collectors, switches as well as further boxes can be installed in a standard 19" rack delivered in a customised configuration, fully wired and tested. Through the integration of capable DVI extenders, the distance between computers and displays can range up to 100 metres.
